Our Vision & Beliefs

Bluegrass United Church of Christ is part of the Indiana-Kentucky Conference, which includes UCC churches in Kentucky and Indiana and the Kentuckiana Association, which includes 21 UCC churches, most of which are located in Louisville and across the river in Indiana.

Bluegrass UCC is a new church start, having its first meeting and worship service on January 9, 2011. For many years, it was dreamed that a diverse UCC community might be formed in Lexington that would be inclusive and progressive. In just three short years, Bluegrass UCC has grown from an average of 15-20 in Sunday worship to 60-70.

As a congregational church, Bluegrass UCC joins other churches in our denomination by sharing a national presence and global reach while relying on each congregation to develop their own identity. From its birth, Bluegrass UCC has been heavily focused on community outreach and is intentional in living out the UCC’s mantra "no matter who you are or where you are on life’s journey, you are welcome here.”

Early in our development, the pastor, church council, and congregation adopted the following statements of ‘Who We Are’:

We seek to be diverse in race, culture, faith tradition, sexual orientation, economics, physical/mental abilities and in all ways we are uniquely created.
We affirm and value all individuals and types of families.
We wrestle with tough questions with no easy answers.
We advocate for social justice and peace in our world.
Our worship style is blended with a variety of music and liturgy.
We "come as we are" as we journey together to "be who God calls us to be."
We read scripture, pray, reflect, meditate, sing and share weekly communion.
We welcome an informal dress code.
We enjoy each other, care for one another and care for our world.

If you are looking for a church where ALL are welcomed and included in our worship and community; if you have suffered rejection because of who you are; if you have become indifferent with churches who seem to be disconnected from the real pressures and issues of our life and world; if you desire a church which invites questioning and is progressive theologically; if you crave a church that puts words to action with community outreach and social advocacy, then we may be the church you are looking for!

We are UNITED in our DIVERSITY to love and serve in God’s world.
