Since its inception, community outreach has been a core tenet of our young and growing congregation. We have established relationships with many organizations in the Lexington community and are very active in our work and broad in our reach.
Following are some of the agencies we work with on a regular basis:
God’s Pantry Food Pantry:
This is one of our primary local outreach activities. Each year, we sponsor 25 middle-school students and supply weekend backpacks filled with enough food to provide for seven (7) small meals. These kids receive free or reduced lunch at school and without these weekend backpacks would go hungry over the weekend. Over the past year and a half, Bluegrass UCC has provided over 1500 backpacks counting 10,500 meals. Our congregation packs backpacks once a month and packs 100 backpacks each month, providing for 700 kids’ meals. In addition to our monthly commitment with God’s Pantry, we participate in the annual Basket Brigade, which supplies over 6000 Thanksgiving food baskets for needy families in central Kentucky.
Monthly Wish Lists:
In 2013, we began a new outreach initiative in which we contacted various agencies in our community and asked them to share with us their ‘wish list’ of needs. In recent months, we have collected items for: Ronald McDonald House, AVOL, Community Inn (homeless shelter), God’s Pantry remote food bank, and other important and vital agencies that need our help. In December 2012, we sponsored a family of four children and a single mom for Christmas.
PRIDE AND FAIRNESS AWARDS:
Bluegrass UCC is very involved in the LGBT community, providing an inclusive and welcoming faith community and working with others in Lexington to call for justice and advocacy. For the past three years, Bluegrass UCC has been a sponsor of the annual fairness awards and hosted events during Lexington PRIDE activities.
Habitat for Humanity:
Each year, we volunteer with a local house-building project and have been recognized as one of the top per capita participants in Lexington
Ky Refugee Ministries:
This is another agency that Bluegrass UCC has been involved with since very early on. KY Refugee Ministries seeks to provide housing, groceries, apartment set-up (furniture, cleaning, etc.), and adjustment to living in Lexington to refugee families from around the world.
Bluegrass UCC continues to open itself to God’s vision for future opportunities for local outreach. Now that we have moved to a new neighborhood and have our own space, we hope to offer more services to our new neighborhood and surrounding area.
